Dr. Lopez graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1995.

Dr. Lopez graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1995. He completed a residency in Ophthalmology and a Fellowship in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery at UNAM, followed by a second Fellowship in Ocular Inflammatory Diseases at the Institute of Applied Ophthalmobiology in Valladolid, Spain, in 2003.

Dr. Lopez worked in the Vitreo-Retinal Department of the Hospital de Nuestra Señora de la Luz, where he trained ophthalmology residents and fellows while improving healthcare for underserved populations in Mexico City. He has served as secretary and coordinator for the Medical Education Committee of the Mexican Ophthalmology Society and as vice-president and president of the Mexican Center for Ocular Inflammatory Diseases.

As Managing Director of the Mexican Institute of Ophthalmology (IMO), he grew patient consultations from 15,000 to 100,000. He established the IMO’s Reading Center, telemedicine program, and satellite locations serving underserved communities. He is involved in research, mentoring theses on uveitis, retina, and epidemiology, co-authoring publications, and organizing a national Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) study. In 2016, he was named an Eye Health Hero by the IAPB.
