Dr. Gopal Prasad Pokharel is a distinguished ophthalmologist with over 40 years experience in ophthalmology and public health. He holds an MD in Ophthalmology from All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. He also completed Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Pokharel played a key role in establishing Mechi Eye Hospital as the Founder Chairman. He has held significant positions, including Member and Secretary of Nepal Eye Hospital's management committee, and currently Chairman of the hospital. Additionally, he served as the chairman of the Institutional Research Review Board and Member of the Management Committee at NNJS and as a Technical Advisor for the Lions Global SightFirst Program in Nepal and Bangladesh.

Dr. Pokharel has worked with national and international organizations like the Government of Nepal, WHO, and the National Eye Institute in the USA. His professional work includes pioneering blindness prevention and refractive error surveys in Nepal, India, China, Chile and South Africa. He has earned prestigious awards including the Carl Kupfer International Award for Prevention of Blindness and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the APAO.

With numerous scientific publications and memberships in professional organizations like the Nepal Medical Association and Nepal Ophthalmic Society, Dr. Pokharel is a respected figure in ophthalmology and public health.
