Azra Herceg is a dedicated EBO-certified ophthalmologist and public health advocate, with a strong commitment to fighting preventable blindness. Having served as the State Secretary at the Ministry of Health in Slovenia, she has played a pivotal role in shaping health policies at both national and international levels. As the coordinator of the Strategic Council for Healthcare at Slovenia's Prime Minister's Office, and the leader of Slovene delegations to the WHO General Assembly, UN General Assembly, and EPSCO Council meetings, her work experience extends beyond her clinical practice.
Her passion for eye health is deeply rooted in her medical background, including her specialization in ophthalmology at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana. Here, she has been actively involved in both clinical practice and research. Her primary research field includes keratoconus and specialized contact lenses where she's been successful in including crosslinking into medical practice at her institution.
Dr. Herceg's motivation stems from witnessing the profound impact that vision loss can have on individuals and communities. She is driven by a vision of a world where preventable blindness is eradicated and strives to make cutting-edge treatments accessible to all.
